If you can smell wood burning, you are breathing in harmful air pollution. Wood burning smoke contains fine particle air pollution (PM2.5), which enters your bloodstream when inhaled and causes heart and lung disease, diabetes, and dementia.

Burning wood is the most polluting way to heat your home. Recent research reveals that even homes using newer “ecodesign” wood burners are three times more polluted than those without.

Wood burning not only harms your health, but also your wallet and the planet. Pressures on household finances or desires to be more eco-friendly may tempt people to burn wood, but research actually shows that wood burning produces more carbon emissions than oil or gas and is almost always more expensive than other forms of heating.

This information will be new for many people. That’s why Global Action Plan is running Clean Air Night on 22 January 2025 to spark a conversation about wood burning across the country and ensure everyone can make informed decisions about how to heat their homes.

We are supporting this important campaign because cleaner air is healthier air. Want to join us? Visit cleanairnight.org.uk to find out more and join the conversation on #CleanAirNight
